Eder, Nelson, Stuart, Vernon Score 50th RCC Wins at ABC Raceway

by Nick Gima

Ashland, WI, September 27 – Victory Lane at the ABC Raceway’s 50th annual Red Clay Classic powered by Enbridge had a bit of a hometown flavor to it, as Kevin Eder, Darrell Nelson, Steve Stuart and Tyler Vernon recorded wins in the historic event on Saturday night.

An event-record 260 entries from seven states and Canada overflowed the pit area, and nearly 4,000 fans enjoyed two sun-splashed days and crisp, comfortable early-Autumn evenings of racing action at the award-winning three-eighths-mile red-clay oval just south of Ashland. The Raceway’s overnight parking area was filled to capacity, and the car count included 60 WISSOTA Late Models, 67 WISSOTA Modifieds, 59 WISSOTA Super Stocks, and an event-record 74 WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds.

Eder, an Ashland native who now calls Cameron home, capped off the two-day, 45-race program with his win in the 50-lap Mid-States Hydraulics WISSOTA Late Model headliner.

Johnny Johnson, winner of the first two Red Clay Classic Late Model features in 1976 and ’78, rode in the Northern Clearing pace truck as Grand Marshall for each of the features, and Raceway Board vice-president Weaver Wherritt, who is credited for the creation of the prestigious event in 1976, waived the ceremonial green flag to start the Late Model feature.

Gunner Frank edged ahead of polestarter Ashley Anderson to lead lap 1 before 2013 RCC champ Nick Anvelink’s car failed him. Eder, who started the race directly behind Anderson, took to the middle lane of the smooth, slick red-clay surface and gradually eased alongside Frank before clearing him and taking control of the race on lap 8.

Behind the lead pair, 2006 RCC winner John Kaanta took over third from Anderson, while Adam Ayotte and Dave Flynn followed at a distance. The laps clicked off quickly as the field fell in line to run the quick inner lane, with Eder better than a half-second ahead of Frank by lap 15.

On lap 26 Flynn and two-time RCC winner Steve Laursen got together to bring about the race’s second yellow-flag stoppage, after which Kaanta used an outside move to slip around Frank for second place, but the move was negated by a spun Jake Hartung. Kaanta executed the same move on the subsequent restart, and this time it counted, but Eder had used the open track in front of him to shoot away to a lead of 2.25 seconds over the next ten laps.

Once Eder caught the tail of the field again, however, Kaanta closed the margin down to just over half a second with five laps remaining. On the next go-around, as Ayotte was attempting to clear the fading Frank for ninth, the two made contact, sending Ayotte into a spin which ended with a hard slap of the front-straight concrete wall on his car’s driver’s side. Ayotte was shaken but otherwise unhurt, and the single-file restart for the final four-lap dash allowed Eder to run away to a final winning margin of 1.4 seconds over Kaanta, with Anderson, Derek Vesel and Kyle Peterlin, who started 12th, following in the top five.

With a $15,000 winner’s share enhanced by bonuses and contingencies, Eder’s final take was an event-record $16,550. It was his 34th career feature win at ABC, his first in a Late Model here, and his first here in any division since June 2019 in a Modified.

Nelson, the popular Hermantown, MN, veteran driver who had won two previous RCC Modified features in 2006 and ’15, as well as a Late Model title in 2022, started the 40-lap XR Events WISSOTA Modified feature from the pole and was never seriously challenged, dominating every lap on his way to his fourth RCC title and a $11,050 payday.

At the drop of the green flag Vernon, who started directly behind Nelson, slipped past outside-front-row starter Pat Cook into second spot, with Jody Bellefeuille in tow to third. Zach Benson displaced Cook for fourth just a couple of laps later, as Nelson and Vernon drew away to discuss the lead over the initial few laps.

The fast-paced Mod A-main was only slowed once, when Shane Sabraski’s top-ten-running car began to smoke heavily before finally creeping to a stop on lap 6. Nelson pulled away after the restart, with Bellefeuille stealing second away from Vernon a couple of laps later.

By lap 11 12th-starting Dave Cain, a two-time winner of this race, and Cory Crapser had moved into the top five, while tenth-starting Brady Uotinen followed Cain and Crapser to sixth. Nelson continued to glide his car almost effortlessly through the middle of the black-slick track while those chasing him searched either the extreme low or extreme high lines for traction, and Nelson had extended his lead to two-and-a-half seconds by the time he caught backmarkers on lap 22.

Over the back half of the run Uotinen had not only made his way into the top three but was seriously challenging Bellefeuille for second, forcing the 2007 RCC champ to “get back up on the wheel,” as he would state it later. While Bellefeuille and Uotinen swapped runner-up honors for a couple of laps, Nelson continued to pull away while expertly maneuvering through slower traffic, eventually crossing under the checkers with a full 5.4 seconds to spare for 12th career ABC Raceway feature win and tenth win in a Modified here, while becoming just the seventh four-time RCC winner.

Bellefeuille finally secured second with four laps to go, closely followed by Uotinen. Jesse Glenz, who won this event in 2014 in a Mod and in 2019 in a Late Model, charged from 13th to finish fourth, and Vernon settled for a solid fifth-place effort.

Stuart, of Ashland, had a much more daunting task in winning his first-ever Red Clay Classic trophy, having to start from the inside on row 8. But once he was able to find a path to his preferred upper groove, he sped to the front, took advantage of a couple of late-race restarts, and led the final six laps of the 35-lap FastLane Motorsports WISSOTA Super Stock feature for a $7,500 payday and an emotional Victory Lane celebration.

Polestarter Tristan LaBarge held off three-time defending race winner Sabraski for the first half-dozen laps, which included surviving a restart after a three-car pile-up on lap 2. LaBarge had an opportunity to slip away after the restart, as Sabraski had his hands full with Dexton Koch for a few laps, while behind them Denis Czech and Kolby Kiehl raced door-to-door for fourth. But Sabraski soon shook loose of Koch and, and lap 6, worked an outside move to get around LaBarge for the lead.

Sabraski, who has 20 of his 1,000 career feature wins at ABC, looked to be well on his way to another one, quickly pulling to a 1.8-second advantage as Koch overtook LaBarge for second on lap 7. Surprisingly, two-time RCC winner Shane Kisling, who had fallen back several spots in the early rounds, found the wide-open outer lane of the track to his liking and surged forward, taking third by lap 10, with Stuart already having taken advantage of the clean upper-lane path to gain fourth.

Sabraski began working his way through tail-end racers by lap 19, well ahead of Koch, when he spun in a rare miscue on lap 20, sending him to the back of the field and putting Koch at the front, with Kisling opting for the outside of row 2 for the restart under the double-file realignment, forcing Stuart to restart in the lower lane alongside. A six-car tangle on the restart delayed the proceedings, but on the second try Stuart beat Kisling to the corner, slid from the low lane to the upper one, and took over second.

Another driver charging through the field at this point was three-time RCC winner Curt Myers, who had to win his semi-feature earlier on Saturday just to make the show, and had started the feature 20th. Over the next eight laps after the lap 20 restart Myers worked on Kisling to move into third, while Koch pushed his lead over Stuart to eight-tenths of a second.

Just when it looked as though Koch would hold off the hard-charging Stuart for the win, Jake Nevala spun into the turn 2 guardrail with six laps remaining. Stuart used the restart to get to the inside on Koch and slip by for the lead, and from there the 11-time ABC Raceway points champ rode the high line to a full-second margin of victory – the 53rd overall of his career here.

Myers held strong to third place in what is believed to be his final race at ABC, as he has informally announced his retirement from racing, and 18th-starting Joey Jensen completed another strong surge to claim fourth, just ahead of 2021 RCC Supers winner Terran Spacek.

Vernon, of Mason, is closing in on a national championship, and his win in Saturday’s Dalbeck Sales WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature may have solidified his chances for the title, with national points runner-up Joey Jensen battling through a less-than favorable weekend.

The Mid-Mod main, which kicked off the four final features of the weekend, got off to a rather dubious start when, after the pre-race introductions, defending event champ Michael Blevins Sr suffered a heartbreaking mechanical failure before the race ever got to its parade laps, spoiling his front-row start. Then, when the green flag was dropped to start the 30-lap run, the dust kicked up by the 26-car field was too heavy to allow for safe visibility for the drivers.

A 20-minute session of light watering and a few half-speed laps to work the moisture in settled the dust quickly, and from there the event was run off much more favorably for all concerned.

As Nelson would do later in the “big Mods,” Vernon took off from the pole and led the entire run, pulling ahead of Nick Koehler and a tight three-car scramble for third involving David Swearingen, Michael Truscott and Ryan Savoy. Vernon’s lead was over a second-and-a-half when, on lap 5, a five-car melee brought the field to a halt.

Truscott pulled past Koehler on the restart and the pair, along with Savoy, stayed right in a row behind Vernon for the next six laps; only Koehler’s bobble on lap 11 allowed Savoy to slip by and change the order. A lap after that Jay Richardson’s stop in turn 3 brought about the race’s final slowdown, and from there Vernon was in complete control.

On lap 14 Jake Smith, who had started 11th on the grid, began to challenge Swearingen and Savoy, but it took until lap 23 for Smith to get by Swearingen for fourth. One lap later Truscott’s car slowed dramatically, and the two-time RCC champ dove to the infield grass, giving up second. Smith took advantage of the opportunity to steal the runner-up spot.

Vernon caught the tail of the running order as he took the white flag, and a lap later he had his 22nd career feature win at ABC, the 57th of his career overall, and $4,550 winner’s check. Smith was 3.5 seconds back but came home ahead of Savoy, Swearingen and Paul Ripley.

Hanco Utilities presented the 24 heat races on Friday, which were followed by four past champions’ features presented by Northern Clearing Inc, which also sponsored Saturday’s four big main events. In the Red’s Auto Late Models feature 2010 champ Peterlin ran away to the win, while in the Tim’s Automotive Machine Modifieds special three-time winner Joey Jensen took the checkers.

Three-time champ Curt Myers was successful in the FastLane Motorsports Super Stock special feature, and 2023 winner Brandon Jensen took the top spot in the Lakes Gas Midwest Mod show.

The already-generous winner’s takes from the over $250,000 advertised purse were enhanced even further with $500 bonuses in each class from CG Bretting Manufacturing Inc of Ashland. Dalbeck Sales of Wakefield, MI, added another $500 to Vernon’s first-place check in the Midwest Modifieds.

The Neighborly Bar of Ashland once again threw a huge party on the Thursday prior to the race weekend to raise funds for the annual “Bridesmaid’s Challenge,” which generated $1,250 bonuses to be paid to each feature’s second-place finisher should they don a bridesmaid’s gown for their post-race photos and interviews in Victory Lane. All four runners-up – Kaanta, Bellefeuille, Koch and Smith – wore the gowns and claimed the bonuses.

A $500 Late Model feature halfway leader bonus was paid to Eder by Joe Provo Race Wear. Additional $300 halfway bonuses from South Shore Sand & Gravel were awarded to Eder, Nelson (Mods), Koch (Supers), and Vernon (Mid-Mods).

Hard-charger bonuses of $500 were awarded in each of Saturday’s features. Cole Searing, who gained 13 spots in the Late Model A-main to finish seventh, took the Anderson Bridges bonus, while Cole Spacek charged from 23rd to 11th to claim the Anderson Bridges payout in the Modifieds.

Jacobson Forest Products awarded their bonus to Myers in the Super Stocks, while 22nd-starting Brandon Jensen finished 12th to collect the bonus awarded by Clint Larson Trucking.

Several position-specific bonuses were generously donated to the Modified feature purse. Contributions from Northern Wisconsin Fence of Phillips went to Cody Carlson, Josh Beaulieu and Cory Crapser, while donations from Joanne O’Brien, in memory of her late husband and long-time local racing journalist Jerry O’Brien, were awarded to Jesse Glenz, Bryce Sward and Andrew Mackey.

Many drivers traveled a long way to compete in this year’s Red Clay Classic, and three were rewarded with $500 long-haul bonuses. Nick Corbett came all the way from Bismarck, ND, to run in the Classic and collect his bonus from MB Customs, while Warner, SD’s Trevor Nelson received his bonus from Jacobson Forest Products.

Jeff Taylor, who calls Locust Grove, AR, home, brought Modified and Midwest Mod entries and received bonuses from both Northern Wisconsin Fence and Don Muzzy Construction.

FDL Star Construction presented $500 “rookie of the RCC” awards to Dexton Koch in the Late Models, Evan Checkalski in the Modifieds, and Tommy Bawden in the Super Stocks.

Kleen Air Heating & Cooling of Washburn presented $250 “clean sweep” bonuses to Eder, Nelson and Vernon for winning both their heats on Friday and features on Saturday in their respective divisions.

Mike’s Place of Superior contributed $50 bonuses to the last-place finishers in each feature – Anvelink in the Late Models, Sabraski in the Mods, Josh Schmidt in the Super Stocks, and Blevins in the Mid-Mods.

On Friday the Late Models took to the track for timed qualifying to determine their starting positions in their heat races in a manner used by the Structural Buildings WISSOTA Late Model Challenge Series. Ashley Anderson set the fastest time in qualifying with a lap in 14.708 seconds (91.787 mph average), which was within a third of a second of his own track record time of 14.378 seconds set here in August 2024.

The 12 semi-features were presented on Saturday by Big Thunder Fireworks, which also provided fireworks displays for the features. Built 2 Media provided the start zone for all races during the weekend.

The wide, smooth, black-slick track during the features produced fast times posted by Cole Searing in the Late Models (15.705 seconds; 85.960 mph), Darrell Nelson in the Modifieds (18.122; 74.795 mph), Koch in the Super Stocks (18.242; 74.005), and Vernon in the Midwest Mods (17.453;

Prior to Saturday’s features, a “pass the helmet” collection was taken up by several drivers to raise donations toward medical and other various expenses for Jason Swan, father of Modified driver Kennedy Swan, who recently underwent an emergency surgery. Over $6,500 was raised thanks to the generosity of the fans in attendance.

Many of the young fans at this year’s Classic participated in a coloring contest put on by AmsOil and VP Specialties. Jesse Glenz Racing, Joe Provo Race Wear, Hoosier Tire North and the ABC Raceway donated prizes to the participants.

The Board of Directors and staff of the ABC Raceway wish to extend their most sincere appreciation to all the individuals and businesses who donated their time, equipment, products and services to help make this historic event possible and contributed to its overwhelming success.

Next up will be the track’s annual awards banquet, tentatively to be held in late January 2026. The ABC Raceway is located 3-1/2 miles south of Ashland on State Highway 13 and one mile west on Butterworth Road.
