Kids Get Meet-and-Greet with Drivers at ABC on Saturday
by Nick Gima
Ashland, WI, June 3 — Fans of all ages will get the chance to spend some quality time with their favorite drivers on Saturday night at the ABC Raceway.
Little Caesar’s Pizza of Ashland will present its annual Kids’ Meet the Drivers Night at the three-eighths-mile northern Wisconsin speedplant. Fans young and old alike will be offered the chance to walk onto the front straightaway of the famed red-clay oval and wander amongst the many parked race cars on the track, with the opportunity to view the machines up close, visit with the drivers, and collect pictures, autographs and even a few treats.
Little Caesar’s is also offering a special offer for this night only. Through Saturday, every purchase of a one-topping “hot-and-ready” pizza from its Ashland store will include a coupon good for a two-dollar discount on an adult grandstand admission ticket for the June 3 race program at ABC.
The annual staple of ABC’s schedule is one of the most popular race nights of the summer, and it gives drivers and fans a chance to connect in a way that many types of sports can’t provide.
“It’s a chance for positive exposure for the drivers and increased interest for the fans, especially the younger ones,” said Raceway president Eric Erickson about the on-track social session. “You can ask a lot of the racers we have today. Many of them became racers, and developed their love of the sport, because of events like this.
“Kids meet their heroes and get a close-up look at the cars they watch on the track. What could be better than that? It’s the kind of thing that can really draw fans closer to the sport they love.”
For the drivers, it’s also an important opportunity to make a valuable connection with the fans and thank them face-to-face for their support. Many of them hand out souvenir photos of their cars and give out treats, and certainly all will sign autographs if asked.
The meet-and-greet will take place shortly after the hot-lap session and prior to green-flag heat racing.
After a couple of weekends away due to weather on May 20 and then a visit by the IRA winged sprints last Saturday, the WISSOTA Modifieds and Pure Stocks will return to action on the venerable oval to join the WISSOTA Super Stocks and Midwest Mods and the ABC Six-Cylinders for a full five-division PolyDome Dirt Track Series program. Ashland’s Kevin Eder (Mods) and Andrew Hanson of Iron River (Pure Stocks) were opening-night feature winners back on May 13.
During last Saturday’s show, three defending track champions each claimed feature wins in their respective divisions – Mason’s Nick Oreskovich in the Supers, Paul Suzik of Ironwood, MI, in the Mid-Mods, and Ashland’s Tiffany Hudack in the Sixes. They were joined in victory lane by Bill Balog of Hartland, who has now won every one of the four headliners held at ABC by the traveling regional series.
Hot laps will start at 6:15 pm, followed by the on-track fan session. The first heat races of the night are scheduled to start shortly after 7 pm. Adult grandstand admission tickets are priced at just $11 each, but they will be discounted at the gate with the presentation of the Little Caesar’s coupon, while kids ages 12 and under are admitted free when accompanied by a paying adult.
“Z-93 Race Night” will air on WBSZ, 93.3 FM, and stream live on www.wbszfm.com, from 4:30-6 pm with up-to-date track news and weather information.
The ABC Raceway is located 3-1/2 miles south of Ashland on State Highway 13 and one mile west on Butterworth Road. For raceday information call (715) 682-4990.
