ABC Raceway Offering Big Night for Kids on Saturday
by Nick Gima
Ashland, WI, July 7 — This Saturday night’s program at the ABC Raceway will be full of fun, especially for the younger fans.
Prior to the racing action, Little Caesar’s Pizza of Ashland will present the on-track Kids’ Meet the Drivers Night festivities. Later, during the break between the heat races and feature action, kids will be invited onto the track for bike races, to be presented by Chicago Iron & Supplies of Ashland.
The pre-race meet-and-greet session will include the various race cars performing at the three-eighths-mile oval on this night parked on the front straightaway, where fans of all ages will be welcomed onto the track for a roughly 20-minute visit with the drivers, get an up-close look at the cars, and possibly even collect autographs, treats and more.
“It’s one of the most popular nights of our regular-season schedule,” according to Raceway president Eric Erickson. “The kids love the opportunity to meet the drivers, and the drivers enjoy visiting with the fans – especially the younger ones. It’s a win-win.”
During intermission, the kids will get to race their bikes, trikes and “big wheels” on the same red-clay oval that their heroes do – or at least portions of it. Participants will be divided into four different age-group classes and compete at different distances on the track, and they will receive prizes for competing.
“A lot of our current drivers started by competing in our bike races many years ago,” Erickson said earlier this week. “Maybe this weekend’s bike races will see some future stock car racers get their start.”
There will be other activities geared toward the youngsters as well, including several giveaways.
The WISSOTA Pure Stocks and ABC Six-Cylinders will be back in action after a week off, joining the WISSOTA Modifieds, Super Stocks and Midwest Mods.
There will be no hot-lap practice prior to the race program, so drivers will start parking on the track for the “meet the drivers” session at 6:30 pm on this Saturday. The first green flag will fly for heat racing at 7. Adult admission tickets are just $11 each, and kids ages 12 and under will be admitted free when accompanied by a paying adult.
“Z-93 Race Night” will air live on WBSZ, 93.3 FM, and stream online at www.wbszfm.com, from 4:30-6 pm with at-the-track news and weather updates. Fans can also listen to the pre-race coverage by downloading the free HCG Radio app onto their smart phone, tablet or other mobile device.
The ABC Raceway is located 3-1/2 miles south of Ashland on State Highway 13 and one mile west on Butterworth Road. For raceday information call (715) 682-4990, or log on to the track’s website, www.abcraceway.com.
