ABC to Shine This Saturday’s Spotlight on Pure Stocks

by Nick Gima

Ashland, WI, July 14 — The ABC Raceway will present its 15th annual “Pure Excitement 25” special for WISSOTA Pure Stocks this Saturday night.

This popular special event, to be presented by the Ashland-Bayfield County Sportsmen’s Club, will offer an enhanced purse for the entry-level division from the track, with fans, race teams and area businesses encouraged to make additional contributions in order to increase the payoff even more.

Members of the Sportsmen’s Club will once again be on hand to sell tickets for its annual raffle. This will be the last chance to purchase these tickets, as the drawings for the prizes – each raffle winner’s choice of high-quality firearms or cash – will be held during intermission at the Raceway. Proceeds from the sale of the tickets will go toward the Sportsmen’s Club’s various programs, including youth firearm safety education.

The event started in 2004 – the third season that the Pure Stocks had been a part of the track’s regular weekly offering. The first “Pure Stock Special,” as it was then called, paid out a total purse of $2,400. Thirty-three entries came to compete that night, and Montreal’s Cory Casari took home the $500 first-place check. Casari eventually went on to his second-straight Pure Stock championship here.

Casari won the 2005 race as well, and he is the only repeat winner of the event to date.

The feature race was extended to 25 laps in 2007 and ever since has been referred to by its current name. The Sportsmen’s Club became the presenting sponsor that year and has retained that title every year since except 2009 and ‘15.

The event has hosted its record-high 35 entries three times – in 2005, ‘07 and ‘09. The largest feature purse ever paid out for the event is $5,890 in 2013, and the payout has exceeded $5,000 five times in its past eight runnings. By comparison, a typical Saturday night Pure Stock feature purse at ABC is about $1,100, based on 24 entries.

Michael Blevins of Hibbing, MN, took home the largest winner’s check in the history of the Pure Excitement 25 – $1,413 – back in 2014. Last year, Ryan Savoy of Foxboro, who is currently in his rookie season in a WISSOTA Midwest Modified, cashed in on a $1,252 payday after becoming the event’s 12th different winner.

ABC Six-Cylinders and WISSOTA Modifieds and Midwest Mods will also be on hand for a full night of exciting qualifying heat and feature race action. Super Stocks will have the night off at ABC this Saturday.

Hot laps will start at 6:15 pm, and racing will get underway at 7. Adult admission tickets are just $11 each, and kids ages 12 and under will be admitted free when accompanied by a paying adult.

“Z-93 Race Night” will air live on WBSZ, 93.3 FM, and stream online at www.wbszfm.com, from 4:30-6 pm with at-the-track news and weather updates. Fans can also listen to the pre-race coverage by downloading the free HCG Radio app onto their smart phone, tablet or other mobile device.

The ABC Raceway is located 3-1/2 miles south of Ashland on State Highway 13 and one mile west on Butterworth Road. For raceday information call (715) 682-4990, or log on to the track’s website, www.abcraceway.com.
