August Schedule Adjusted at ABC; Sixes Featured Saturday
by Nick Gima
Ashland, WI, August 11 — Only three race nights remain on the 2018 regular-season schedule at the ABC Raceway. And with the cancellation of last Saturday’s program, a lot of action will be packed into those three nights.
The action begins this Saturday with the 13th annual “Summer Sizzler” special for the Raceway’s own Six-Cylinder class, along with the qualifying features for the Afco Shocks “Race of Champions” for the WISSOTA Modifieds, Super Stocks and Midwest Modifieds. With WISSOTA Pure Stocks also in action, the five-division program will be presented by the Safari Bar of Ashland.
This is the season’s biggest event for the Sixes, as they are unique to ABC and do not race at any other track on a regular basis. An enhanced purse will be offered, and with the race being held so late in the season there is a lot on the line in terms of both purse and points.
Two-time track champion Tiffany Hudack of Ashland is holding a 34-point lead on Trego’s Randy Graham heading into this weekend’s races. Hudack won her division-leading fourth feature of the season two Saturdays back, while Graham suffered a DNF, to break what had been a deadlock at the top of the standings at the time and strengthening Hudack’s chances for a third crown.
Graham is the defending champion of the “Sizzler” and has the other three Six-Cylinder feature wins at ABC this season, while Hudack won the event in 2016. Only two other drivers – Travis Swanson of Washburn and Neil Adamzak of Ashland – have ever won this race twice.
The division’s 2018 points championship could hinge on what happens in this event on Saturday.
This will also be the ninth straight year that RoC qualifier feature winners from the Ashland track will be awarded invitations to compete in the prestigious “Race of Champions,” which is part of the WISSOTA 100 weekend to be held September 12-15 at the I-94 Speedway in Fergus Falls, MN. The RoC features at I-94 will pay out $1,600 to the “big Mod” winner, $1,500 to the Super Stock champ, and $1,400 to the Mid-Mod winner.
As for the balance of the schedule, the “Mid-Mod Madness” special to have been presented by the Lake Shore Cafe of Ashland last Saturday was washed out, but it has been reset for Saturday, August 18, to be run in conjunction with the Raceway’s “Summer Blast” fan appreciation party, to be presented by Outlaw Graphics & Apparel of Ashland and Northern Wisconsin Fence of Phillips.
The regular-season concludes on Saturday, August 25, when Pepsi, North Star Beverage of Hurley, and WIMI-FM of Ironwood, MI, present “Championship Saturday Night,” when all five divisional champions will be crowned. The Raceway staff will then prepare for the 43rd annual Red Clay Classic, to be presented by FastLane Motorsports of Ashland and Tim’s Automotive Machine of Bloomer, when over 200 WISSOTA Late Models, Modifieds, Super Stocks and Midwest Mods will compete for a total purse recently increased to an event-record $100,000 – one of the largest purses offered for a short-track event in the Midwest.
Hot laps will start at 6:15 pm and racing will get underway at 7. Adult admission tickets are just $11 each, and kids ages 12 and under will be admitted free when accompanied by a paying adult.
“Z-93 Race Night” will air live on WBSZ, 93.3 FM, and stream online at www.wbszfm.com, from 4:30-6 pm with at-the-track news and weather updates. Fans can also listen to the pre-race coverage by downloading the free HCG Radio app onto their smart phone, tablet or other mobile device.
The ABC Raceway is located 3-1/2 miles south of Ashland on State Highway 13 and one mile west on Butterworth Road. For race day information call (715) 682-4990.
