Rainy Weekend Hampers ABC Raceway’s Efforts Again
by Nick Gima
Ashland, WI, June 16 — Over four inches of overnight rain and a gloomy forecast made for an easy – albeit frustrating – decision for the Board of Directors of the ABC Raceway on Saturday.
The conditions forced cancellation of Saturday’s scheduled race program, which was to include the already-once-postponed Kids’ Meet the Drivers Night activities to be presented by Little Caesar’s Pizza, as well as a night of fund-raising activities in coordination with Northern Clearing Inc.
The cancellation was the fourth over the first five scheduled race nights of the 2018 season at the award-winning northern Wisconsin three-eighths-mile red-clay oval.
To say the least, the staff, drivers and fans have had about enough of Mother Nature’s refusal to cooperate during weekends so far this summer.
“Obviously we’re all getting frustrated with how the weather has played out so far this season,” stated Raceway Board president Eric Erickson. “We have had to cancel several popular events during the first third of our season, and now to call off a night like this, in which fans could have taken advantage of free admission and enjoyed the meet-the-drivers session on the track, which both the racers and the fans enjoy – it’s just so difficult.
“And on top of all of that, we have lost out on an opportunity to help two very worthwhile charities, which we would have been very proud to be a part of.
“The only good part might be that the season is going to be condensed down significantly at this point, which means that fans won’t want to miss a single night of action for the rest of the season.”
The next night on the ABC Raceway’s calendar is also a very big one – a first-time-ever visit by the United Midwest Sprint Series’ Traditional sprint cars. The UMSS will bring its powerful non-winged sprints to join the rest of the track’s five regular weekly divisions – WISSOTA-sanctioned Modifieds, Super Stocks, Midwest Mods and Pure Stocks, plus the ABC Six-Cylinders – for what promises to be a very high-speed race program.
Adult main grandstand admission tickets will sell for $15 each, and kids ages 12 and under are admitted free when accompanied by a paying adult. Hot laps will begin at 6:15 pm, and the first race of the night is scheduled to get the green flag at 7.
“Z-93 Race Night” will air live on WBSZ, 93.3 FM, and stream online at www.wbszfm.com, from 4:30-6 pm with at-the-track news and weather updates. Fans can also listen by downloading the free HCG Radio app onto their smart phone, tablet or other mobile device.
The ABC Raceway is located 3-1/2 miles south of Ashland on State Highway 13 and one mile west on Butterworth Road. For more information log onto the track’s website, www.abcraceway.com. or on race days call (715) 682-4990.
Due to 4+ inches of rain yesterday, the current rain, and standing water on the grounds, tonight’s races are canceled.
Remember that next Saturday June 23rd, we have UMSS Sprint Cars!
