Bellefeuille, Lawrence Score First Wins of ‘09 at ABC First-ever win for Polacek

by Nick Gima
 Ashland, WI, July 11
-- An excited Jody Bellefeuille climbed from his WISSOTA Modified racer in Victory Lane after winning his first feature of the season at the ABC Raceway and immediately asked, “Can we race here again tomorrow?”
The way Bellefeuille was cruising around the high groove of the three-eighths-mile red-clay oval, who could blame him for asking? The Duluth, MN, hotshoe hit his marks perfectly, survived a couple of late restarts and held off a charging Duane Dale for his third career Ashland win.
Also collecting wins during Saturday’s AmsOil Dirt Track Series program presented by Ashland’s County Market were Scott Lawrence, Taylor Leuthner, John Kallas, CJ Polacek and Tim Carbon.
Bellefeuille took full advantage of a pole-position start, outrunning Robby Bunkelman into the first turn and pacing every lap by circling around the fast outer lane. Even after Ross Lightner’s broken car slowed to a stop after one lap, Bellefeuille built up a solid lead ahead of a great three-car battle for runner-up honors between Bunkelman, Dean Yrjanainen and Dale.
By lap 4 Bunkelman settled into that position, but it took a caution-flag slowdown on lap 7 for him or anyone else to get a fair shot at Bellefeuille. On that restart Dale slipped past Bunkelman for second, and the division’s points leader spent the next 11 laps reeling in the race leader, diving to the bottom while Bellefeuille continued to tour along the high side.
Bill Byholm put on a charge during the second half of the run, moving into third and gaining on Dale with every lap. Finally, with the white flag in the air Dale - who had nearly pulled to Bellefeuille’s rear fender - made a dive move from the top of turn 1 and Byholm caught him in the left-rear quarter panel, spinning both cars and forcing a green-white-checkered finish. On the second attempt to complete the event from there, Bellefeuille held off Dale by a couple car-lengths for the victory. Dean Yrjanainen came home third, while Al Uotinen made a late-race move to take fourth from Bunkelman.

Lawrence, of Superior, has had a relatively quiet summer in Ashland; the five-time defending WISSOTA Super Stock track champ had registered only one heat win prior to Saturday night. But the 25-year veteran displayed a lot of patience before chalking up his first feature win here in over ten months.
Yellow flags were common throughout the super stock 20-lap headliner, with three attempts to start the race negated before the field completed its first lap on the smooth, slick surface. Dave Flynn did all he could to hang on to the top spot from his outside-front-row starting spot, fending off first Ken Truscott and later Lawrence, Brian Mikkonen and Kevin Eder.
Lawrence began his assault on the leader on lap 7, moving by Truscott with an inside pass. Lawrence then overtook Flynn for the lead a lap later, but another of the pesky yellow flags flew for Randy Spacek’s broken driveshaft. So Lawrence waited one more lap after that restart, and another inside move paid off for good.
Eder had a pass for second on lap 9 waived off when Don Koivisto spun, but he pulled off the move again at the race’s mid-point, only to lose the position to Mikkonen one lap later. Then Flynn charged back on the outside to reclaim second on lap 11, but the position was Mikkonen’s again on lap 12, this time for the duration. The lap 13 stoppage for Truscott’s spin drew the field back to Lawrence’s bumper, and a two-car get-together with three laps left ended the event as its time limit expired, giving Lawrence his 41st career Ashland win, ahead of Mikkonen, Eder, Flynn and Charlie Anderson.

Kallas continued his domination of area WISSOTA Street Stock fields by taking his second straight feature win at Ashland while becoming the first driver to win three main events here this summer. Polesitter Greg Kuklinski set the early pace, but Kallas wasted no time moving to the front, sweeping around Dennis Groom and Cory Casari into second place on lap 2.
Kuklinski had built a healthy lead prior to Kallas’ gain in position, but the Hurley star used a strong high-line path and eliminated Kuklinski’s advantage within four short laps, with Groom in tow. Then Groom attempted a move to overtake both cars ahead of him, but contact with Kuklinski spun the leader and sent Groom to the back for the race’s lone slowdown.
On that restart Kallas went around Kuklinski and took the lead for good, cruising from there to his ninth career win in Ashland. Kuklinski was not too far in arrears in the car he flipped here the week before, while Larry Haderly worked hard to get by a strong-running Bruce Kalmon for third late in the go. Groom was credited with a fifth-place effort in the final rundown after first-time visitor Andy Hoch was disqualified for a wheel issue, despite Groom’s tangle with Casari on the final lap.

Leuthner, the youngster from Foxboro, overcame a near-disasterous bobble a third of the way through the WISSOTA Midwest Modified 15-lapper to collect his second checkered flag of the season here. In another race that saw more than a few yellow lights blink on, Leuthner charged hard around polestarter Lance Solem to take the race lead after a lap 1 restart, and then was saved by the last of the caution flags on lap 6.
On that circuit Leuthner skidded up out of turn 2 a bit strong and slapped the back-straight guardrail. Solem squeezed down between Leuthner’s slowing car and the low-groove-running Jimmy Latvala, and Solem and Latvala touched wheels, sending Latvala into a spin into the infield grass just prior to turn 3. If not for the double-spin by George Dalbeck and Rob Weber just a few yards further up the track in turn 3, the yellow flag wouldn’t have come out; Leuthner would have lost significant ground to Solem, and Latvala would have been done for the night.
“I thought I was done when I hit the wall,” Leuthner said later in Victory Lane. “I thought I had cut a tire.”
Instead, Leuthner led Solem and Latvala to the restart, and Leuthner pulled away to his third career ABC Raceway win. Solem barely maintained second spot to the end, while Latvala won a late-race skirmish with a stout Jesse Ogston for third, a ways ahead of fifth-place Rick Przybylski.

Polacek, in his sophmore season from Phillips, ran strong to his first-ever feature win in the Six-Cylinder 15-lap A-main. After an initial miscue to start, the first nine laps ran uninterrupted, with front-row starters Tyler Luger and Scott Ovaska running side-by-side for the lead. Polacek pulled up behind the pair and waited for an opening, and on lap 9 he shot the gap cleanly between the leaders coming off a corner.
A Tyler Hudack spin brought out the caution on the next lap, and from there Polacek ran a fast pace, pulling away to what seemed to be an easy win. But Chuck Hawkinson’s spin drew the field up behind the leader with two to go, and four attempts at a green-white-checkered finish tested the nerve of the young leader. Polacek was up to the challenge, however, holding a five-length advantage on Luger at the final stripe.
Don Muzzy edged Ovaska at the line for a photo-finish third-place performance, and Pat Beeksma was not far back in fifth.

For the second straight week, the Pure Stocks ran off their ten-lap finale non-stop, with Carbon holding off a tough Ken Tody, Jr, for his second win here this summer. Carbon went around the front-row pair of Tammie Bretting and Joe Wolfe to take the lead on lap 2, and when Bretting bobbled on the next lap the balance of the field checked up, giving Carbon a margin of breathing room.
Points leader Austin Blom then began a run to the front, using an outside line to pull up alongside Tody for second, and the pair tracked down the leader. But Blom scraped the back-straight guardrail just enough to slow his momentum and leave Tody to challenge Carbon alone. Tody drew to Carbon’s trunklid but no closer as the lead pair came across under the checkers nose-to-tail. Blom held on for third-place money, just ahead of Tim Carlson, who won a nailbiter with Wolfe for fourth.

Along with the action by the 104 racers in attendance, kids’ bike races held at intermission were won by Parker Krueger (ages 2-4), Zak Brooks (5-7), Austin Mindoff (8-10) and Walker Gay (11-13). Bikes donated by Scott Hudack Racing, the County Market and the ABC Raceway were won by Rianna Martin, Zack Hanau and Nathan Johnson.

This coming Saturday night, the ABC Raceway will host its fourth annual WISSOTA Street Stock Challenge, presented by Chicago Iron & Supply. An increased purse is on the line for the streeters, including a winner’s share of over $600. Fan and business contributions are welcome to help make the purse attractive for drivers coming from throughout the region.
The track’s other five weekly divisions will also be in action, and adult admission tickets are just ten dollars, while kids ages 12 and under are welcome in for free with a paid adult admission. Hot laps are set for 6:15 pm and racing starts at 7. “Race Night” will air live on WBSZ, 93.3 FM, from 4:30-6 pm with at-the-track news and weather updates.
