June 9th Advantage RV Modified Tour

Touring Mod Series Coming to ABC Raceway Saturday

by Nick Gima

Ashland, WI, June 9 — What better way to get back into the racing groove than with a visit by some of the Midwest’s top “big Mod” racers? That’s what should be in store for fans coming out to the ABC Raceway on Saturday night, when the Advantage RV Modified Tour comes to town.

Auto Value Auto Parts of Ashland & Ironwood will be the presenting sponsor for this very special night of racing, featuring all five regular weekly divisions in action and highlighted by the “Kwik-Trip 30” main event for the WISSOTA Modifieds, presented by Ashland’s Kwik-Trip Convenience Stores.

After three cancellations over the first four weekends of the season at the northern Wisconsin speedplant, fans, racers and the track’s staff are all eager to get some racing action in.

The stop at ABC will be the seventh of 13 scheduled shows for the touring series, which is headquartered in Watertown, SD. The Tour began in Sauk Rapids, MN, on June 1 with a win by defending series champion Jeremy Nelson of Alexandria, MN, and, after a rainout the next night, continued on to Bemidji, MN, on June 3, where Rice, MN’s Shane Sabraski picked up the victory.

The “Race to the Hill” stage of the Tour schedule started in Rice Lake on Wednesday, where Dan Ebert of Lake Shore, MN, earned the checkers. On Thursday night in Grand Rapids, MN, the win went to Andy Davey of Hibbing, MN.

The Tour continues throughout the weekend, with a stop at Superior on Friday before coming to Ashland and then heading to Proctor, MN, on Sunday.

Sabraski, a six-time WISSOTA national champion in Super Stocks and Midwest Mods, was leading the series’ points standings heading into Superior on Friday night, ahead of Ebert and 2016 Tour champ Mike Stearns of Hecla, SD. All three are expected to make the trip to ABC on Saturday, along with fourth-in-points Jerome Guyot of Fannystelle, MB; Nelson, and many others.

ABC Raceway’s weekly runners – including defending track champion Bill Byholm of Glidden, five-time ABC champ and opening-night feature winner Steve Stuart of Ashland; Phillips’ Jeff Spacek, who is a six-time champ here; Ashland’s Kevin Eder; and Bessemer, MI’s Neil Balduc – will be out to defend their turf. The event should also draw some regional “heavy hitters” such as Mike Anderson of Jim Falls; Johnny Broking of Grand Rapids, MN; defending Red Clay Classic champion Dave Cain of Corcoran, MN; and three-time Red Clay Classic champ Ashley Anderson of Elk Mound.

WISSOTA Super Stocks, Midwest Mods and Pure Stocks, and ABC Six-Cylinders are on the card as well, providing for a full night of qualifying heats and A-feature action.

Hot laps will start at 6:15 on Saturday, and racing is set for 7 pm. Adult admission tickets are just $15 each for this special event, and kids ages 12 and under will be admitted free when accompanied by a paying adult.

“Z-93 Race Night” will air live on WBSZ, 93.3 FM, and stream online at www.wbszfm.com, from 4:30-6 pm with at-the-track news and weather updates. Fans can also listen to the pre-race coverage by downloading the free HCG Radio app onto their smart phone, tablet or other mobile device.

The ABC Raceway is located 3-1/2 miles south of Ashland on State Highway 13 and one mile west on Butterworth Road. For raceday information call (715) 682-4990, or log on to the track’s website, www.abcraceway.com.

Ashland, WI, June 3 — Next up at the three-eighths-mile red-clay oval will be a visit by the Advantage RV Modified Tour, on Saturday, June 9. The program, to be presented by Auto Value Auto Parts of Ashland and Ironwood, will include all five of the track’s regular weekly divisions – the WISSOTA-sanctioned Modifieds, Super Stocks, Midwest Mods and Pure Stocks, plus the ABC Six-Cylinders – for a full night of heat and feature race action.

The headline event of the night will be the “Kwik-Trip 30” feature for the “big Mods.” Last summer Landon Atkinson of Little Falls, MN, used a late-race pass to steal the win in both Atkinson’s and the Tour’s first-ever visit to the Ashland track.

The stop in Ashland is the seventh of the Tour’s 13 scheduled races for 2018 and the fourth during the Tour’s five-track, five-night swing through the region, starting in Rice Lake on Tuesday, June 6, and ending at Proctor, MN, on Sunday, June 10.
