ABC ‘Pure Excitement 25’ to Wait Another Week

ABC ‘Pure Excitement 25’ to Wait Another Week

 Ashland, WI, August 18
— Despite the best efforts of track prep crews and the many drivers generous in their assistance, Mother Nature was too tough an opponent.
One late-afternoon rain shower, followed by another light spinkle at the scheduled 7 pm start time, made the sloppy conditions on the 3/8ths-mile red-clay oval at the ABC Raceway too challenging to overcome, and after over three hours of hard work track officials saw it in the best interests of driver safety to cancel Saturday night’s stock car racing program.
“We were in a difficult situation, and we tried very hard to make the best of it,” said Raceway president Kurt Beeksma. “On one hand you have a lot of drivers who traveled a long ways to come and race, and you want to give them every chance to race and put on a show for the fans.
“However, you don’t want to risk any driver’s safety by putting them out on a track that isn’t acceptable, and you hate to ask fans to wait any longer than they already have, because who knows how much longer it would have taken to get the track ready.”
The cancellation moves the highly-anticipated “Pure Excitement 25” pure stock special, presented by the Ashland-Bayfield County Sportsman’s Club, to Saturday, August 25, as part of the Raceway’s Championship Saturday regular season finale and Fan Appreciation Night program.
While track prep crews were working on the racing surface, fans and area businesses were generously contributing to and building up the Pure Excitement 25 purse. Over 30 pure stock entries were in the pits for last Saturday’s show, and with a total purse flirting with the $5,000 mark and a winner’s share nearing $1,000, chances are there could be more drivers making the trip to Ashland this Saturday.
“We appreciate the support of all the workers, drivers and others who helped,” Beeksma stated, “and we also appreciate the patience and understanding of the loyal fans who came out to watch the show. Hopefully everything will come together for a great night of racing next Saturday.”
The final night of the 2012 regular season of racing at the ABC Raceway will be presented by Northstar Beverage of Hurley, Pepsi, and WIMI, 99.7 FM, of Ironwood, MI. All five weekly classes – WISSOTA-sanctioned modifieds, super stocks and Midwest modifieds, plus the track’s own six-cylinders and pure stocks – will be in action, and the season champions in each division will be crowned by the end of the night’s race program.
Hot laps will begin at 6:15 pm, and the first green flag of the night is scheduled to be thrown at 7. Pit and grandstand gates will open at 5 pm. Adult tickets are just $10 each, and kids ages 12 and under are welcome for free with a paid adult admission.
The ABC Raceway is located 3-1/2 miles south of Ashland on State Highway 13 and one mile west on Butterworth Road. “Race Night” will air Saturday on WBSZ, 93.3 FM, and online at from 4:30-6 pm with live up-to-date track news and weather information. For raceday information call (715) 682-4990.
